Making the most of your wayfinding

Wayfinding is one of the most useful and important unsung heroes of any event. Without clear, accurate and easy-to-use wayfinding signs, we’d quite literally be lost.

Good wayfinding isn’t just about it looking nice, it’s got to include a strategy too. If your audience feels lost or bewildered that will reflect badly on your event. Putting together a spatial problem-solving strategy is a vital part of your event experience, showing your guests exactly what they need and where they can find it.

Wayfinding tips and tricks to help make your event one to remember:

Start with a map

An entryway map is one of the first things event visitors will look for. This is instantly useful to help visitors find where they need to be. Make sure this is orientated to the ground.

Label each different space

Although it’s important to keep your branding consistent, each location can have a different context and focus, and should be easily differentiable. Visitors need to recognise the difference between food areas, exits, information areas and toilets. Use colour.

Keep paths and routes clear

Well-structured routes give your visitors a much easier experience. Make public spaces and pathways clear. Use symbols.

Choices should be simple

Overwhelming your visitors with too much information at once is almost as stressful as not giving them any. Don’t offer too many different signs in one place, keep typography easy to read and make sure directional arrows are clear. Declutter decision points!

Don’t forget to have fun

Just because something is functional, doesn’t mean it can’t be fun too. Have fun with colour coding, digital signage, 3D props and themes to match your event type.

Design with updates in mind

Directions and details are likely to change between events. When designing your signage, it can save you a lot of time and money to leave yourself space for changes and updates.
