Teamwork shines through
at Wimbledon

In 2023, the Henson Franklyn team were invited to support Star Live in their inaugural year as The Championships overlay suppliers. Working closely with both The All England Lawn Tennis Club (AELTC) and Star Live, we were thrilled to be involved in the start of a new era at The Championships.

  • 17 structures, across 3 sites in London
  • Extend style of existing buildings
  • 275m of bespoke fascia
  • 633sqm of composite cladding
  • Sustainably sourced/produced in UK
  • Structurally engineered fixings
  • 7 weeks of install
  • A complex site with limited time/access
  • Multi-contractor collaboration

To maintain its status as the premier tennis tournament in the world, The Championships at Wimbledon are in a constant state of evolution and enhancement. With their focus on enhancing visitor experience and embracing sustainability, the AELTC wanted these temporary structures to seamlessly integrate into their prestigious surroundings, matching the appearance, style, and quality of the permanent infrastructure. Moreover, they placed a requirement on every aspect of the project to be aligned with their goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2030.

Star Live assembled a team of specialist organisations to help realise AELTCs vision, challenging HF to find a way to replicate all the aesthetics of Centre Court through innovative facades and cladding. This came with a number of challenges: Everything had to be demountable (reused, year in year out) so materials have to be hard-wearing as well as colour accurate. The inherent time constraints of such a high-status sporting event, compounded by a complex site with logistical intricacies, required a meticulous attention to detail (and a few installation rehearsals).

The outcome was a resounding success, clearly evident in the final result. But what you don’t see – that made this project special – is the open collaboration between all the organisations involved. Star Live created the perfect environment for everyone to do their bit well; a cohesive group of high-performing professionals that really delivered, continuously, across all the sites.

Sometimes a great project just reveals itself. It was a pleasure to be a part of this one.

With Star Live securing the temporary structures contract for The Championships, Wimbledon, we needed a fit-out team that were able to focus on the attention to detail, rigorous planning and high-quality finish. Having worked together over many years we had confidence in the Henson Franklyn team to do just that. With many hours of design, planning, manufacture and then on-site delivery, we trusted them to deliver, and they did.
